In 2018, Ukraine to decline the production of grains and pulses by 1% – Institute of Agrarian Economics

In 2018, the general harvest of grains and pulses in Ukraine will reach 61.7 mln tonnes, a decrease of 0.8% compared with last year volumes (62.2 mln tonnes), declared the Director of the National Scientific Center “Institute of Agrarian Economics”, Academician of the National Academy of Agrarian Sciences (NAAS), Yuri Lupenko on February 19.

Due to the expected decline of wheat yield figures to 3.88 t/ha, which will fail to compensate for a slight increasing of the planted areas (up 1.7%), the harvest volumes of wheat will decrease by 6.3% compared with last year – to 25 mln tonnes, he said.

Scientists of the Institute of Agrarian Economics forecasted that the production of grains will increase by 6.8% – to 33.2 mln tonnes. In particular, the production of millet will increase in almost 1.5 times – to 137 thsd tonnes, and corn production – up 9.3%, to 26.3 mln tonnes. But the production of buckwheat will remain almost at the last year level (down 0.6%), and total 209.3 thsd tonnes. Also, the reduction of harvested areas and yield figures will decrease rye production by 20.7% – to 375 thsd tonnes.

At the same time, in the current year Ukraine will decrease peas production to 886.7 thsd tonnes (down 14%), oats – to 457.8 thsd tonnes (down 6.9%), and rice – to 61.7 thsd tonnes (down 16.1%).
